The present version of Barnabas is the first edition ever printed, but it is very old, written well before the invention of the printing press. It consists of 50 manuscript folios written on paper, and contains 29 chapters. It is believed that this manuscript was written by the Dominican priest Jan van Ruusbroec between and ) as a missionary in the city of Viterbo in Italy. He was a close colleague of the future pope Urban IV, and the pope acknowledged his work and named him Bishop of Tournai, in. The work was first published as 'La Sibillana' in Early Middle English, and published as the 'Libelle of Barnabas' in modern English in The main text consists of 29 chapters from Genesis through 2 Peter. Three previously unknown chapters have been identified as the actual 'Book of Barnabas' by others. Verse 1 in various manuscripts refer to "the old and new law". Other manuscripts have the phrase "Gospel, law, and prophets" or "law, prophets, and gospel", or "law, prophets, and Word of God". It is unclear whether any of these variations of the phrase "the old and new law" refer to a single manuscript, or whether they are the result of different editors' assumptions about what to put in the margin of these verses. Some scholars have suggested that they may all refer to different elements of the same manuscript. In the Greek text, chapter 4 is missing a significant portion of the text, which is found in the same chapter in most modern versions of the Bible. The Bible in the original Greek includes a story involving the wife of a man named Sceva, who is bent on harming Jesus, which is omitted in the current English translations. Some scholars believe that the portion of the Greek text lost in the manuscript includes the opening lines of chapter 4, which differ from the rest of the chapter.
